Balkonkraftwerk: Plug-In Solar for Renters in Germany

You do not need to own a roof to make your own solar power. In Germany, a Balkonkraftwerk (plug-in solar, sometimes called balcony solar) lets renters and apartment owners put a couple of panels on a balcony, railing, wall or garden and plug them into a normal outlet.

What it is

A small system, usually one to four panels with a micro-inverter, that feeds power into your home's circuit. Whatever it produces, your fridge, router and standby devices use first, so you buy less from the grid.

The rules in 2026

  • The inverter limit is 800 W, which is the usual cap for a simple plug-in system.
  • Many setups connect through a standard outlet (Schuko); some installers still recommend a dedicated socket, so ask if unsure.
  • You need to register the system in the Marktstammdatenregister of the Bundesnetzagentur. This is the key registration step, and the process has been simplified in recent years.
  • Meter: check with your grid operator whether your current meter is suitable. If it needs swapping, they normally handle it.

Rules can change, so check the Bundesnetzagentur and your grid operator before buying.

Renters: what to know

Plug-in solar is now treated as a privileged measure for tenants and apartment owners, which means landlords and owners' associations generally cannot just say no without good reason. It is still polite (and wise) to talk to your landlord first, and to make sure the mounting is safe and does not damage the building.

Is it worth it?

A balcony system will not zero your bill, but it can take a useful bite out of the daytime power you would otherwise buy. How much depends on how sunny and unshaded your balcony is, which direction it faces, and how much you use during the day. Balconies facing south, east or west with little shade do best.
